Defense Minister Rajnath Singh reviews bilateral relations with his US counterpart

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held bilateral talks with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin on Monday and reviewed the full range of bilateral defense cooperation and the regional security situation, including in Indo- Pacific and the wider Indian Ocean region.

Mr Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are in Washington to attend the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue between India and the United States on Monday – the first under the Biden administration being hosted by Secretary of State Tony Blinken and Austin.

Mr Singh, along with Secretary of Defense Dr Ajay Kumar and a high-level delegation, held the meeting with US Secretary of Defense Austin, who was accompanied by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior Pentagon officials, the Defense Ministry said in a statement in New Delhi.

“The two defense ministers reviewed the full range of bilateral defense cooperation and the regional security situation.

“The two ministers recognized the importance of the Indo-US defense partnership for peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and the wider Indian Ocean region,” he said.

They discussed ways to deepen the Major Defense Partnership (CDM) and work together to advance the quality and scope of bilateral defense cooperation, according to the statement.

They also looked at military-to-military engagements, information sharing, enhanced logistical cooperation and the ability of armed forces to cooperate closely within compatible communication arrangements. In this context, closer cooperation of special operations forces emerged prominently.

The two ministers also discussed ways of closer collaboration between the defense industries.

Singh stressed the need for co-development, co-production between India and US companies and invited US companies to India for manufacturing and maintenance of defense equipment, the statement added.

Earlier, upon joining the MoD, Mr Singh had been granted an ‘enhanced cordon of honour’.
